NIMAS / AFB Braille Translation Software Training

American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is pleased to offer braille translation software training with NIMAS updates on November 28 and 29, 2007. This training will be held at St. Petersburg College in St. Pete Beach, Florida, prior to the Getting in Touch with Literacy Conference (GITWL). The November training will feature experts in braille software development and braille transcribing. The training sessions are designed to help braille transcribers learn more about the new updates associated with NIMAS publisher files and braille translation programs.

The November training will include a train-the-trainer instructional approach in support of national capacity building.

NIMAS Training will be limited to sixty (60) participants for each braille translation training session.

Purpose of the training: To provide training for people who currently transcribe instructional materials into braille for children with visual impairments in K-12, have worked with publishers' source files, and want to upgrade their skills to work with NIMAS textbook files. The training will cover the use of NIMAS source files, received from publishers, with DBT, MegaDots, and Braille2000.

There will be 3 sessions:

Wed, November 28, 2007 (8:30 a.m. - noon ) - MegaDots

Wed, November 28, 2007 (1:15 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.) - Duxbury Braille Translator

Thurs, November 29, 2007 (8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) - Braille2000

All sessions will be held in Room 303 of the University Partnership Building, at:

Participants must:

  1. be familiar with at least one braille translation software program; and
  2. be willing to share this training information concerning the skills and knowledge learned at the AFB NIMAS Capacity-Building Training with others in their community or school or agency.
